Intervention of Coastal and Maritime Tourism Working Package in the Third EUSAIR Forum in Catania (Sicily) on June 25th, 2018
On May 25th, tourism panel is organized by the EUSAIR pillar cordinators 4 (Croatia and Albania) named "Financing opportunities – sustainable tourism". Mr Jean-Pierre Halkin, Head of Unit, DG REGIO chaired this event with the interventions from different stakeholders and representatives of operating programmes, including representatives of Ministry of Regional development and EU Funds as a leader of PANORAMED TWG „Coastal and Maritime tourism“. During the event it was stressed high added value of transnational and interregional European cooperation in matters of tourism. Another point is the significance of the tourism industry as a major economy driver in the European economy.
(The Adriatic and Ionian Macro-regional area is a major tourism attraction, mainly because of its strong and old history and civilisation, because of its cultural variety, sun guarantee and beautiful beaches, clean waters and the tastiest food. These are only a few factors which make this region a major international destination. But the challenge is whether the region is able to cope with the increasing tourism demand)
One of the conclusions of this successful session is that efforts at macro-regional level in the tourism sector should become more visible. Also the added value of transnational cooperation for the sector and tourism stakeholders should be promoted. Macro-regional strategies can have a major role to promote Europe as a destination in world markets.
